It’s time to start your LIST!

BC Emailer_2014

I write this as the white stuff is lightly falling outside my window, a gentle reminder of what is to come. And with that said, someone is bound to count the days on a calendar, and start the countdown to the holiday season.

20141103_212332Next week, the beyondCRAFT show & sale begins! I will have many new mixed-media pieces there, as well as new cards, jewellery & a few surprises. This is a great event in a fabulous location.

I was honoured to find one of my mermaids gracing the front page of the Stouffville Free Press, advertising the show. I still can’t believe it’s the front page! Speaking of big, I am in the midst of creating more mermaids on bigger canvases, which although a little scary, seems to be working out well. Below are 2 new canvases I recently finished.

So start your list & come whittle away at it next weekend!

Georgina Studio Tour

IMG_0320

This weekend is the Georgina Studio Tour and I am still not quite believing I am on it! Partnered up with the very talented painter Thelma Sellers, we are upstairs at Homestead Orchards Barn Store, 3961 Old Homestead Road in Sutton or location “S” on the tour map. The tour runs this Saturday & Sunday, from 10am to 5pm both days. Looks like this weekend is shaping up to be sunny and warm, so if you are in the mood for some good art, we’d love to see you!

FYI, as we were setting up tonight, the delicious aroma of apple pies baking were wafting up through the floorboards to us — we could hardly stand it, so even if you just feel the need for a good apple pie, this is the place to get it!

Painting Owls

I love the web! I especially love taking art courses on-line.  There is something sublime about sitting at the computer in your jammies, in the morning light watching an artist at work. Your hot cup of coffee in one hand, your other hand on the mouse — continually stopping, rewinding, rewatching & learning. This is what I consider bliss.

NEA_0564I fell in love with a painting a few months back and immediately started taking an on-line course with its creator, Juliette Crane. The course, How To Paint An Owl 2 has been such a great investment! It has taught me many new techniques, and it has allowed me to incorporate things I already do into these new creations. I love how their characters evolve with each added layer. Neon paints — something I thought I would never have a use for, have become one of my favourite supplies to accent with. Stayed tuned for more animals…Violet

Donna Downey Workshop

DD & me

Donna Downey & me

Last Friday night, I had the pleasure of attending the lovely mixed-media guru Donna Downey‘s “PanPastel Painting” workshop in Cambridge at The Art House Studio. I had never been to Karen Ellis’ store and after walking in I wondered why it had taken me so long to get there! Her shop is definitely a mixed-media supply haven, with wonderful art from previous classes decorating the walls.

I would have gladly spent the whole weekend there taking classes, but since I had limited myself to only one, I decided to try something completely new to me, which I had no previous experience with. PanPastels are soft pastels packed into solid cake form. They come in 80 beautiful colours and are quite addictive.

During the 5-hour class, I was able to create these 2  11×14 canvases, which I still can’t believe I was able to accomplish. No drawing, no sketching, just application of these luscious colours with blending tools.

Let me know what you think! Now that I have conquered trees, any suggestions as to what I should attempt next?

Purple Turtle Art Festival

I can’t believe that we are already mid-way through July! I have been a little computer & camera lazy lately, but that does not mean I have not been creating!

Here is a peek at some of my new canvases that will be at the Purple Turtle Art Festival this weekend, July 13-14.

Home

home 8×10

I love making these “home” canvases. I am really into making sure I put a bird on it & adding lollipop trees.

mermaid 16×20

My mermaid on the rock was a canvas I experimented with right before the OOAK Art Show in the spring, and they all sold out right away. So I have made 2 more, but they are pretty labour intensive. I have decided to also offer these as 8×10 prints.

buddha 8×10

This is a pretty funky buddha. I have been experimenting with paint and I was inspired by artist Juliette Crane when I created this background.

The lotus is a symbolic flower that seems to lend itself to many of the phrases that I chose for canvases.

This looks like it’s going to be a great weekend. If you are looking for something to do or you are in the area, drop by this awesome event located on the fabulous grounds of The Briar’s Resort, Jackson’s Point.  Come see amazing artwork by over 35 local artists, and enjoy a lunchtime BBQ by The Briar’s. Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 11am-4pm. Free Admission.

I had to face the facts.

DIna WakleyDon’t you hate being the last person to the party? Last year, Dina Wakley, a fabulous favourite mixed-media artist came to Toronto, and by the time I found out about it, all of her classes were completely booked. So this year I was rock-show-quick to secure my spot in her class at Bizzy B. And to compensate for previously missed classes — I took 2!

face sketchI have always been afraid of faces — drawing them that is, so I signed up for Facing the Facts, and I couldn’t believe how the faces just came to life! I’m not sure why they seems angry, but I will work on that. I was so inspired I think I will take the 100 Faces in 100 days challenge started by that class on FB.

Next, in Graffiti of My Life, I created an art journal using techniques like colour field wash, confined collage & book binding with acrylic paints & ink on watercolour paper. It was intense!

I will definitely use some of these techniques I learned at the GACAG KidzArt Saturday Connection art class I am teaching Saturday, June 29. If you would like to know where I will be this summer, check my EVENTS page for upcoming shows.

nadya & kelly purkeyThe day after the storm I drove to Crop & Create in Markham to take a class with awesome Ms Kelly Purkey. I had not scrapped in a while, so it was nice to plunge in and learn some new techniques.

Another Snow Day!

howard

Outside my kitchen window. This is Howard, our resident woodpecker. He & Beth his wife don’t mind my camera at the kitchen sink. But our bigger set of woodpeckers, Fred & Ginger are easily spooked.

Major snow day today. Love it. Until I have to drive tomorrow…

All white outside, but colour blooming on the canvas.
